"In the silence, a voice." With this slogan, the Confederation of Penitentiary Unions (Con.si.pe.) launched a nationwide mobilization today in ten Italian cities, including a demonstration in Cagliari in front of the former Buoncammino prison , headquarters of the Regional Penitentiary Administration Office. The initiative, part of the "September in Blue" campaign of September 25, aims to highlight the difficulties of prison police: grueling shifts, reduced staffing, unpaid overtime, and daily assaults .
In Italy, there are over 63,000 inmates, compared to approximately 50,000 available places, while there is a shortage of more than 18,000 officers . According to the union, this situation is no longer sustainable and requires urgent action.
"Prisons," says Roberto Melis, national secretary of Con.si.pe., "are now on the verge of collapse: staff are exhausted, attacked daily, and without protection. We demand dignity, respect for our work, and guarantees."
