Vandals targeted the monument to the Fallen at Sea, located in Piazza Umberto I, in front of the Porto Torres Town Hall.
Unknown assailants attacked during the night, tearing off a portion of the wooden wave, representing the sea, where the heroic sailors met their deaths. Once again, gangs of thugs are attacking public property and, for the umpteenth time, they are attacking the monument commissioned by the "Giovanni Solinas" Italian sailors' group and inaugurated during a ceremony held on May 25, 1980, attended by then-mayor Annibale Francesconi.
The wooden sculpture was created by the sculptor and ceramist Giuseppe Silecchia and, over the years, has unfortunately been vandalized by the usual nocturnal hooligans who senselessly destroy their city's public property. Over the course of its 45-year life, the monument had undergone one restoration in 2012, and subsequent restorations after being damaged by vandals.
The monument was erected by the Sailors of Italy to fulfill their noble commitment of devotion to all their brothers in arms who sacrificed their lives at sea to safeguard their homeland.
