A sacrilegious act has shaken the Church of Christ the Risen , led by parish priest Don Michele Murgia. Thieves, apparently on short notice, stole the tabernacle, the niche that holds the Eucharist displayed inside, by forcing entry from the back of the parish church.
The break-in occurred during the night, through a small window in the sacristy, hidden from the street, allowing for more privacy. The thief apparently smashed the glass, leaving blood stains that could easily lead to the culprit's identification . Inside, he stole the bronze tabernacle, displayed on a pedestal near the church altar, along with the golden chalices, liturgical objects used to hold the hosts. The unpleasant surprise came this morning, when the priest temporarily replacing Father Murgia discovered the theft.
The video surveillance cameras installed inside the building are crucial in identifying the culprit, who, having injured himself on the glass while entering the building, also left traces of blood that need to be examined to lead investigators to the perpetrator. The substitute parish priest reported the incident to the police, who are investigating the incident.
