Porto Torres, farewell to Sandro Ascione: «From up there he will play for Annamaria»
A final farewell to the guitar-loving truck driver who crashed his articulated lorry into an embankment along the Sassari-Alghero roadSandro's smile, the last farewell to his wife Annamaria before getting on a heavy vehicle to carry out his duty. «It is in the workplace that you missed», are the first words of Don Boniface Da during the homily celebrated for the last farewell to Sandro Ascione , the 65 year old truck driver, originally from Porto Torres, victim of the accident on the Sassari -Alghero , which happened on June 4th, just as he was driving the articulated lorry which fell from the overpass.
"You came here, to my church, on 26 September 2020 to get married to Annamaria, and even now you will always be next to your wife", continued the parish priest in the church of the Holy Spirit, the place chosen by the couple, three and a half years ago ago, to celebrate their wedding.
Happy and joyful days, interrupted by a terrible tragedy, an accident just a few days before the Four Lanes. «Now Sandro will play for you from up there », he said, turning to his wife. The guitar was his passion . «The time has come to meet you again, - said Don Boniface - because faced with the passing of Sandro, our friend, brother and husband, the words of comfort from the Lord come to mind. Together with his brothers and sisters, friends and relatives, we unite ourselves to God's faithfulness and avoid pouring into resignation all of God's work and the fruit of his work which will become the fruit of eternal life."
A crowd of friends, relatives and family present in the parish greeted him in hushed silence . That day he met his death while traveling for work from Porto Torres to Oristano, aboard a heavy vehicle. He never arrived at his destination. He fell down a cliff. It was the firefighters who pulled him out of the cockpit while still alive. He was conscious and alert and recognized a dear friend of his. He passed away shortly after.
« Sandro went to meet the Lord while he was carrying out his daily duty - he adds - he was a special, cheerful, nice person and the joy of his wedding day will be unforgettable for us. A joy that, despite this day of sadness, will survive forever."
