He was carrying out his inspection tour on the ship together with two other sailors when, engaged in a maneuver on the upper deck, a violent wave surprised them from behind, knocking them to the ground against a metal grate. The accident that occurred on the morning of 7 October 2019 cost the life of the 24-year-old Bulgarian sailor, Yordanov Denislav Ivaylov, who died on the Euroferry Malta freighter sailing to Porto Torres. The other sailors were seriously injured. For that accident at work, two years later, the trial began which sees three people accused of manslaughter and violation of the protection of health and safety in the workplace.

Yesterday the captain of the ship, the chief mate and the boatswain appeared before the preliminary hearing judge Giuseppe Grotteria. The defendants, all originally from Bulgaria, are defended by the lawyers Silvana Redaelli, Gianluigi Poddighe, Giuseppe De Santo and Cesare Fumagalli, who raised the issue concerning the lack of requirements to set up the trial in Italy, a thesis rejected by the deputy prosecutor of the investigation, Enrica Angioni and the defendants of the civil parties who affirm the existence of the conditions for the competence of the Italian judge. The reserve will be dissolved by the judge on 18 January.
