The house sold at auction and the nightmare of suddenly being left homeless. In that little house, there was all the love and sacrifice of a father who is now no longer with us. With him, the security of a future and the certainty of a home have also gone.

A shattered dream for Mariella Buioni, 50, and her husband Antonio Careddu, 57, both from Porto Torres. Their thirty-year-old son, his partner, and their four-year-old daughter also live in the house they inherited from their father, who passed away in 2010.

On Tuesday, July 22, the bailiff will knock on their door, in the suburban neighborhood of Li Piadriazzi, to ask them to leave their home.

"What had been our refuge until now is no longer our home. Five desperate people have lost everything," Mariella sadly says. "My father had a scrap metal and car demolition business. He worked his entire life, a generous man to everyone, especially those in need. Then the business went bankrupt and the house was mortgaged. He died at 62, and without him, everything collapsed, including our stability and the ability to maintain our home." Mariella is a raging river as she tells her story. Her husband stopped working due to a hereditary disease.

The subsidy is not enough to guarantee the payment of rent for a new home, it does not represent a reliable income.

"We've tried knocking on every door, begging for solutions, but so far we've only found closed doors: no real help, no alternative." Mariella Buioni also tried contacting the City's Social Services Office, but no emergency housing was available. For two years now, they've been seeking help, waiting for a civilized world to show solidarity and offer them a glimmer of hope. Just around the corner lies the nightmare of an ultimatum and ending up on the streets.

"We're scared," adds Mariella, "because time is running out, we find ourselves having lost everything and without knowing where to go. We're people who don't want to lose our dignity, but ask that someone at least show us a way forward, before it's too late."
