The company has offered "no reassurances for the future, as a new blockade could arise even in the short term." It's a very fragile balance, the one that will govern plastic collection across Sardinia from now on, a situation that exploded the other day with the failure to collect bags in Selargius and the immediate red alert being raised in the capital. That brief message, yesterday, was sent to the mayor of Cagliari by Luisa Giua Marassi, the councilor for Urban Ecology, who was in charge of contacting the company.
Overview
The LLC involved is "So.Ma Riciclo," which was closed for a day: at the Macchiareddu plant, on the Cagliari side of the industrial zone, there was no room to store any more plastic. "There's a problem, there's no point in hiding it," they said over the phone. This is also because the company can't manage the disposal of its own waste. It works like this: those who order the pressed plastic to be sent to the designated centers are Corepla, Coripet, and Conip. These are the consortia that govern the plastic supply chain within the Conai system, the leader in waste sorting, including paper, glass, metal, and wood.
The Region
Rosanna Laconi, regional councilor for the environment: "The crisis is spreading across the country. But Sardinia is more exposed than other regions: transportation costs are higher and alternatives are few. A blockade here would have immediate and much more serious effects."
