The new plastics plant in Macchiareddu will be operational by the end of October. The facility, built in the Eleventh Street industrial area, will have a processing capacity of approximately 4,000 tons per year and will be the largest facility of its kind in Sardinia. It represents a potential solution to the summer storage emergency that had halted collection in many municipalities.

The investment is €22 million , €18 million of which comes from the National Recovery and Recycling Plan (NRRP). The new facility will complement the existing facilities in Oristano and Arborea. "With this facility , the problem will be solved once and for all," explains Cacip President Beniamino Garau, "but our goal is to go further. We want to close the supply chain and launch a truly circular project, preventing the separated plastic from being sold off the island."

The Consortium's vision is to transform recovered materials into new resources. Among the options under consideration is the use of pyrolysis technologies to transform plastic waste into energy products. The project is part of a broader strategy for the recovery of waste-to-energy waste. "We intend to do the same with waste-to-energy ash," adds Garau, "and we are collaborating with the University of Cagliari on a project to transform these materials into new products, from street furniture to specific types of concrete."

The stated goal is also to bring Macchiareddu back to the center of a new phase of industrial development. "We must break the siege of photovoltaics, which for years has occupied a significant portion of the available land," concludes Garau. "To revitalize Cagliari's industrial area, we must engage with businesses throughout Sardinia, understand their needs, and create the conditions for them to find the space and services they need to invest here."
