The prosecutor Paolo De Falco had already asked for two life sentences for the brother and sister-in-law of Angelo Maria Piras, the farmer of Lula who was shot dead on January 25, 2015 in the countryside of the town.

But during the second-degree trial, the Court presided over by Judge Massimo Poddighe sensationally decided to reopen the investigation , summoning a slew of witnesses including carabinieri, consultants and experts, but also arranging a new report on the stub exam that was negative result.

On trial for the crime are Nico Piras, 41, and his ex-wife Alice Flore, 38, accused of premeditated murder . However, the Court rejected all the requests of the defenders Rita Dedola, Domenico Cerasaro, Francesco Lai and Potito Flagella who asked for further expert reports and to hear other witnesses already heard in the previous degrees.

At the next hearing, on September 16, the expert will be given the task to understand whether the stub made on Nino Piras and the negative result was carried out late, therefore with any traces of gunpowder now deteriorated.

In today's hearing, the accused showed the judges his shoe size (42), a smaller number than the one that had been seized close to the murder .

With a sensational sentence on November 3, 2021, the Cassation had annulled the first appeal process that had ended in Sassari with the sentence of 24 years of the two Piras spouses (overturning the first degree sentence that had acquitted them), establishing a new trial before the second degree judges of Cagliari.

The annulment was motivated because the verdict had "re-proposed an alternative thesis with respect to the first degree sentence, violating the obligation that requires the appellate judge who overturns the first degree acquittal sentence, to draw up a reinforced motivation".

The pg De Falco, who had supported the accusation in Sassari, in the last hearing confirmed the request for sentencing and requested two life sentences, but the appeal-bis is now reopening . Today a carabiniere from the Bitti mobile radio operating unit, some consultants and an expert who worked on the extraction of DNA from one of the seized shoes, of a different number from that worn today by the accused, were summoned to the witness stand.
