In Sardinia, the voice of protest resonates loudly: this morning over a thousand red flags of the Cgil filled Piazza Garibaldi in Cagliari, accompanied by the sound of the Gavoi drummers and the classic “Bella ciao” in the background. From every corner of the island, protesters gathered to denounce the economic maneuver of the Meloni government, accused of hitting pensioners. A battle that the national union has chosen to fight throughout Italy, until October 31 .

With a third of the Sardinian population made up of pensioners, the issue is critical: "This 36% pays taxes and supports the country, yet welfare and healthcare are being cut", denounces Giacomo Migheli, regional secretary of Spi Cgil. The situation is even more dramatic for those who receive pensions of around 600 euros a month, a figure increased by just three euros, a "shame, an offense to dignity", adds Migheli .

Stefano Cecconi, national secretary of Spi Cgil, reiterates: «This is the protest of those who demand rights and respect. These people have worked for years, honestly paying contributions, and now they are asking for decent pensions and a functioning public health system, not only for those who can afford it. Health is not a commodity: those who need care must be able to receive it at home, if they want it. There is no going back on these achievements».

For the union the fight continues: it is a battle for dignity, social justice and the defense of the rights achieved .
