In Sardinia the number of deaths in the emergency room is growing (a lot), even if there are (many) fewer accesses. And the patients who have had to increase the costs of being treated in private facilities more than the others on the peninsula are Sardinian. The new generations of doctors do not work in the field, for the indispensable apprenticeship, because the postgraduates are considered eternal students. Family doctors are forced to follow the inhabitants of six or seven countries, and they can't do it. And if you focus on the "homes of health" to cover local medicine, it happens that they are also inaugurated three times. And they don't work.

It was supposed to be a conference organized also with the aim of proposing solutions, the one organized today in Cagliari by Cittadinanzattiva, at the T-Hotel. The title was: "Health care emerging from the pandemic: critical issues and future prospects". The solution hypotheses have arrived. But first a flood of problems emerged, supported by unequivocal data: many for each intervention by doctors and nurses who took turns at the microphone.

Disturbing numbers have emerged from the report by Giorgio Pia, promoter of the initiative, for years head of the emergency room of the Santissima Trinità.

Official tables state that the peak of accesses to the emergency-urgency facilities of all hospitals on the island was reached in 2019: they had been 479,985. In the following two years the upheaval of Covid. Then 2022, with the return to slow normality: 328,030 patients showed up. Problem: in 2019 there were 601 deaths in the emergency room. In the year just ended they rose to 866. 44% more: a huge amount (in 2020 there were 630 deaths declared, down to 564 in the following 12 months) .

The reasons for these crazy numbers are provided by Pia himself: «The average age of those who die in the emergency room is high. So these are elderly patients who for two years, during the pandemic, were not treated and did not receive direct or indirect assistance". When they get to the hospital they are in bad shape. And they die. But there is another factor: «In the emergency room, assistance is guaranteed, excellent professionals work there. But let's look at the numbers this afternoon: there were 40 patients at Is Mirrionis. Two fewer at the Policlinico, with 4 reds. Very high numbers. And those are organic and departments ». And here is the overcrowding, the difficulty of management.

«I think it is necessary to review the management of the triage codes, in order to be able to better redistribute the activities of the available personnel». "Colors" assigned to the criticality that must go from four to five.

According to what emerged from the interventions, it would also be necessary to strengthen local medicine, to prevent all the sick from ending up in hospital. The slides illustrated by Francesco Enrichens of Agenas, former health director of the Ats in Sardinia, suggest that this is already happening on the island. But the doctors in the room turned up their noses: in reality there is a more critical situation than that represented by the slides.

A fact certified by other numbers, always official, illustrated by Emilio Montaldo, president of the Order of Doctors of Cagliari: the national health service is experiencing constant definancing. The sums that every Sardinian is forced to spend for treatment in private facilities are growing, because the public does not guarantee the service: between 2020 and 2021 they increased by 27.9%. "The highest increase in Italy: it happens in the region that has the poorest province in the country", Montaldo underlined, "here the citizen is forced to pay for the treatments out of his pocket".
