Following ISTAT's update on the state of healthcare in Italy, the latest analysis from the Gimbe Foundation confirms: the number of Sardinians who forgo healthcare services continues to rise.
According to the report, which also processes Agenas data, in 2025 the share of Sardinians who have given up one or more healthcare services will be equal to 19.5% of the population , with the island taking first place in negative terms among the regions, exceeding the Italian average of 9.6% by almost 10 percentage points (Istat data).
This figure has worsened further compared to 2023 , when the Gimbe Foundation itself highlighted that 13.7% of the Sardinian population had forgone medical care: even two years ago, the worst result in all of Italy.
As for the reasons, Gimbe highlights how long waiting lists remain the most frequent cause of withdrawal (6.5%), followed by the cost of services (5.2%).
Compared to 2025, in 2026 in Sardinia there was also a worsening in the percentage of on-time bookings for first visits (-3.7 percentage points), while it improved for diagnostic tests (+5.2 percentage points).
Looking at the positive data, in 2026 the rate of assignment of the priority class P for first visits (within 120 days) on the Island is equal to 40.1%, over 5 percentage points above the Italian average of 34.9%.
"The new Agenas data on waiting lists," Gimbe comments, "show some signs of improvement, but the situation remains critical: over 4 million reservations are still past the deadline. Furthermore, the data doesn't allow us to know how many services were provided within the deadline, nor to reconstruct the overall waiting time for citizens from the prescription to the delivery."
