"Everyone loved Gianfranco Pilo." This is how the mayor of Ossi Pasquale Lubinu remembers the figure of the forty-two-year-old who was declared brain dead today in the intensive care unit of the Santissima Annunziata hospital in Sassari. The tragedy occurred last Saturday in the town, in the courtyard in front of the man's home, in the Sa Tregonaja neighborhood, where the birthday of one of his three children was being celebrated.
The event was almost over and Pilo was about to take one of the little guests home when, presumably for fun, he asked the child to start the car which however “jumped out” and hit the victim . The victim had just opened the door of another car and ended up crushed between the door and the railing behind him. The crushing of his chest caused cardiac arrest and minutes passed without breathing until the arrival of 118, able to revive the forty-two-year-old with a defibrillator. However, his conditions immediately appeared desperate and when doctors tried to awaken him from a pharmacological coma, the attempt failed.
"He was always a jovial person, with great patience with children and a hard worker," continues Lubinu who announced the cancellation of the events planned in Ossi for the weekend. Pilo was traveling for a Sardinian transport company, crossing the peninsula for weeks and in these last days he was taking a break . "Gianfranco," adds the town's Culture Councilor and Professor Maria Franca Campus, "was very attentive and thoughtful with his children, whose school initiatives he always followed."
Other residents of Ossi also emphasize his cheerfulness, all affected by a tragedy that took away a husband, a father and a worker. In the meantime, however, the family has granted an organ transplant, a gesture of generosity capable of saving other lives .
