A large fire broke out this morning in Oschiri, on Via Umberto, on the outskirts of town. The flames, which affected an area covered in Mediterranean scrub and pasture, came dangerously close to homes, forcing residents to evacuate in a hurry.

Firefighters and the Carabinieri responded to the scene to control the blaze. However, support from fire marshals and volunteer teams was also needed: extinguishing operations were complicated by the fact that at this time of year the vegetation was already dry and the fire was being fanned by the wind.

The causes are still uncertain.
