About 40 thousand euros in ten months . This is the amount that a postal worker from Oristano stole from various current accounts and Postepay cards, impersonating customers, closing cards, taking possession of the money by pretending unsuccessful transactions . The woman was discovered by the Carabinieri and suspended from service, with a provision issued by the GIP of the Oristano court. Investigated for episodes of embezzlement (the Post Office, even though privatized, is still considered a public body) and impersonation, she allegedly appropriated, according to the Carabinieri of the Ghilarza and Abbasanta stations who conducted the investigations, about 40 thousand euros.
Among the victims, especially the elderly, disabled and foreigners. The investigations began in the first months of 2024, following numerous complaints filed by the victims. According to the reconstruction, the woman, in certain cases, "extinguished the Postepay cards of the victims and using documents or copies of documents already in her possession, she replaced the account holders by opening postal savings books and withdrawing sums that she herself had transferred - the Carabinieri explain - In other cases, she misappropriated sums of money registered to various account holders by simulating transactions that, when asked for explanations, she claimed had not been successful".
The complaints started when the victims noticed the missing money. On some occasions – as the Carabinieri explain – «it was ascertained that the suspect, to divert any investigations, had used the workstations of other colleagues who were absent». Furthermore, the victims were often elderly, frail and vulnerable people. In some cases, it was a Chinese customer or a deaf person.
During the house search, material useful for the investigation was found, such as an identity card and a health card in the name of a third person , as well as photocopies of documents and a diary with card numbers matched to the names of their respective owners.
