The atmosphere is increasingly tense in Massama prison. Following the Easter protests, when an inmate climbed onto the roof and remained there for two nights and two days, on Thursday evening a prison officer was violently attacked by a high-security inmate . The incident, which stemmed from trivial motives, had serious consequences for the officer, who, as Roberto Santini, general secretary of the Italian prison organization (SINAPPE), noted in a statement, "was taken to the emergency room of Oristano hospital for treatment ," he explained. "This is a serious incident and emblematic of the tensions experienced in Massama prison."
The Secretary of the Sinappe recalls that the institute's critical issues had already been highlighted in the past, "where there has been a serious staff shortage for some time, while the number of inmates is constantly growing, with a significant number of individuals suffering from serious health and psychiatric problems." And the lack of continuous medical care represents a further problem.
"We urgently require the immediate removal of the prisoner responsible for the attack," added the SINAPPE secretary. "It is also essential to reevaluate prison assignments, avoiding the further transfer of prisoners with psychiatric disorders or health problems."
