Another nightmare day in Oristano prison : in two sections and at different times two inmates burned the cell furnishings, including mattresses and sheets. The flames spread immediately with noxious fumes that invaded the corridors making the air unbreathable.
«The first inmate – reconstructs the UIL PA Penitentiary Police of Sardinia – locked himself in the bathroom inside the detention room, opened the shower, making it difficult for the agents to intervene and they struggled to bring him to safety. In fact, the fumes also invaded the inside of the bathroom and the inmate struggled to breathe but did not open the door anyway and remained barricaded inside. After several attempts, the officers managed to break down the door and saved the person responsible for the fire. After several minutes they managed to put out the flames and bring the situation back to normal, until another inmate a few hours later caused another fire, forcing the officers to once again risk their own safety to save the perpetrator of the act. and secure the other inmates present in the section to avoid intoxication from fumes or serious burns".
«We are commenting on an episode that could have ended in tragedy – the words of the general secretary Michele Cireddu -. If the Agents had not acted promptly, putting their lives at risk, the epilogue would certainly have been different. The Penitentiary Police risked their own safety to save the inmates from a fire but incredibly cannot count on the healthcare area immediately because the doctors in the institution are no longer there , it seems they have resigned en masse and their safety is not guaranteed presence within 24 hours. For an Institute of these proportions this is an extremely alarming figure, we had asked for the intervention of the ASL councilor Armando Bartolazzi, of the Superintendent Antonio GALATI, of the heads of the Department but still, months later, the situation remains unchanged".
«Congratulations from all levels of the UIL go to the staff who intervened, hoping that the top management of the Administration will also recognize the interventions implemented with the same gratitude», the conclusion.
