An extraordinary open city council meeting will be held to discuss with local institutions the potential impact on the city of Nuoro of the government's (unsupported) decision to allocate the Badu 'e Carros prison exclusively to the 41-bis regime , and to agree on any countermeasures.
The civic assembly, convened on an exceptional basis in the Chamber of Commerce conference hall starting at 3:30 PM on Friday, January 9, represents a signal from the municipal administration "against the possibility that the penitentiary, from a place of re-education, could be transformed into a mere punitive container."
Prime Minister Elia Carai has accepted the request, presented by majority councilor Matteo Cicalò, to convene an assembly open to the input of Sardinian parliamentarians, regional councilors, mayors, and all other stakeholders. "The city," Mayor Fenu reiterated, "has chosen to invest in culture, research, innovation, and international projects. This clear approach, geared toward openness and growth, risks being undermined by decisions with strong symbolic value and a significant impact on external perception. This is why a serious and transparent institutional dialogue with the Government and the Ministry of Justice is necessary: decisions affecting Nuoro must be carefully considered, shared, and consistent with the future the city and its surrounding region are building."
The Prime Minister, however, needs detailed information on the decision to allocate the Badu 'e Carros prison exclusively to prisoners under the 41 bis regime: " It is our intention," Carai states, "in light of the outcome of the discussion, to prepare a cohesive and effective response to a decision that risks having significant and lasting social, economic, and institutional consequences for the city of Nuoro and the entire region."
