The pattern was well established. One of the two approached an elderly man, ensnared him, and indulged in coaxing him into believing that something could be concluded in the bedroom. Once inside the house, the accomplice entered the scene: with the victim distracted by her friend, she entered the other rooms and took away all the valuables she found.
The list of thefts committed in recent weeks by a couple of young Romanians, aged 31 and 33, in some towns in Southern Sardinia is long. The Carabinieri of the provincial command of Cagliari were on their trail. And this morning they were caught in Pauli Arbarei.
The investigations were not easy. The robbed pensioners, inhibited by shame and embarrassment, reported the facts in a vague manner. Or remained silent altogether.
But this morning the military patrol from the Lunamatrona station intercepted the two women as they were leaving the home of a pensioner from Pauli Arbarei: they were keeping them under surveillance from the time they entered the town. During the check, one of the two was found in possession of 1,100 euros in cash, a sum that – as was soon ascertained – had just been stolen from the elderly man. The reconstruction of the facts confirmed the modus operandi: while the thirty-one-year-old distracted the victim in the bedroom by feigning romantic involvement, the thirty-three-year-old searched the other rooms in search of money.
The two, unemployed and already known to the police for property crimes, were arrested red-handed for aggravated theft in a home. After the formal procedures, by order of the Public Prosecutor's Office of Cagliari, they were taken to the Court for the summary trial which, for the two arrested, concluded with the validation of the arrest and the obligation to reside in the municipality of Cagliari, with the prohibition of leaving the home at night.
