Tempio's preliminary hearing judge, Marcella Pinna, has indicted veterinarian Quinto Puddu and his wife, Pina Murru (the first hearing is scheduled for February 19). The prosecutor's requests regarding the case of the Pedres kennel in Olbia, managed by the non-profit organization Movimento per la Biodiversità, were granted. According to the prosecutor, the facility, called Canile Europa, was deficient due to the alleged lack of care for its "guests."
Some animals reportedly died; in April 2015, the shelter was closed and approximately 800 animals were transferred. Alleged mistreatment is therefore being investigated. The non-profit organization Movimento per la Biodiversità, according to the Guardia di Finanza investigation, was officially a non-profit organization but operated as a for-profit corporation. According to the prosecutor, it therefore improperly enjoyed privileges and tax breaks. The Tempio Prosecutor's Office is alleging fraud against 26 participating municipalities (including Castelsardo, Tempio, Villacidro, and the Unions of the Municipalities of Marmilla and Gerrei). These are the entities that had entrusted the strays to the Olbia shelter.
The civil parties were lawyer Claudia Ricci, representing the National Animal Protection Agency, and her colleague Giusi Demuro, representing the Municipality of Tempio. Puddu and Murru, represented by lawyers Nicola Di Benedetto and Michele Ponsano, have consistently denied all the charges.
