"Gold from the Luigi Cocco Collection. The New ISRE Acquisitions" arrives at the Museum of Sardinian Popular Life and Traditions in Nuoro. The inauguration will take place Friday at 6:00 PM and will showcase a selection of approximately 80 of the most valuable and significant gold jewelry pieces from the entire Luigi Cocco Regional Collection in Cagliari, recently expanded by the Istituto Superiore Regionale Etnografico with the acquisition of a significant group of approximately 400 new pieces. Buttons, earrings, chains, hooks, and ritual and devotional ornaments testify to the exceptional quality of traditional Sardinian goldsmithing between the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
The exhibition highlights their craftsmanship and the connections between these artifacts and the island's daily life, festivities, and traditional dress. The exhibition is part of a broader project to enhance the Cagliari Collection (most of which is already on display at the Cittadella dei Musei in Cagliari). The forms, symbols, and techniques employed narrate the history, evolution, and social significance of ornamentation in the Sardinian context, as well as the external influences evidenced by some objects from outside the island.
The new acquisitions, achieved thanks to regional funding, enrich one of the most important and comprehensive repertoires of traditional Sardinian goldsmithing. "With this exhibition, the ISRE continues its commitment to the preservation, enhancement, and dissemination of Sardinia's cultural heritage," says ISRE President Stefano Lavra.
The new acquisitions of the Luigi Cocco Collection, achieved thanks to a significant 2023 grant from the Region, significantly enrich the jewelry collection, offering the public the opportunity to experience firsthand one of the finest expressions of traditional island craftsmanship. The exhibition will be open until September 30th every day (except Mondays) from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm and from 3:00 pm to 8:00 pm at the Costume Museum in Nuoro.
