In a post published on his profile while in Bologna to speak at the ANCI national assembly, Nuoro Mayor Emiliano Fenu announced news he described as a turning point, anticipated for over a decade. The Sardinia Region has awarded the municipality a grant of €10,380,405.26 to cover the technical deficit that had long weighed on the institution's budget.
"We can finally share with you some news that marks a turning point we've been waiting for for over ten years," writes Fenu. "The Sardinia Region has awarded the Municipality of Nuoro a grant of €10,380,405.26 to cover the technical deficit that has weighed on our budget for too long."
The deficit, the mayor recalled, was the result of strict accounting rules introduced in 2015, which prevented the Municipality from using part of the restricted surplus. This had stalled numerous already funded projects, reducing the administration's spending and investment capacity.
The previous administration, led by Andrea Soddu, had already managed to obtain an initial tranche of resources, but it was not enough to restore balance to the municipal coffers, which were already burdened by off-budget debt and now also by the lack of local tax collections.
"The contribution gives the municipal administration greater flexibility to plan current spending and make new investments. This is a historic achievement that frees the city from a constraint that for years has blocked resources allocated to public works and essential services."
The mayor emphasized that this achievement is the result of teamwork, both political and technical, carried out with dedication and a spirit of collaboration between the Municipality, the Region, and the Nuoro regional councilors.
"We found the Region to be open and responsive to institutional demands," Fenu added, "and this confirms that when institutions communicate, results come."
With the awarding of the grant, one of the most complex chapters in Nuoro's financial history closes. "Today marks the beginning of a new phase in which we can build, with greater peace of mind, the development path our city deserves."
