The two-day strike of Brotzu staff proclaimed by the Nursing Up union for Thursday and Friday 23 and 24 May has been confirmed.

The union reports: no intervention on the part of the Health Councilor Armando Bartolazzi, the critical issues have not been eliminated. «The situation in the Businco and San Michele facilities», explains Diego Murracino of Nursing up, «is dramatic due to the numerical scarcity of hospital workers. The criticality is maximum: the OSS is not present in the wards and intensive care units during the night."

Unions not happy with the Brotzu solution: «Coverage for the departments without supplies during the night is guaranteed with a single auxiliary worker who would be available on telephone call to provide basic assistance and personal hygiene to over 600 patients, a situation blatantly ridiculous and offensive."

And again: «From the analysis of hospital shifts», continues the union, «the presence of only two nurses on shift for over 20 patients frequently emerges, with a ratio of 1 to 12, far from the optimal ratio of 1:6 ».

In summary, the nurses who are already numerically lacking «must try against their will to make up for the absence of the Obstetricians. Shortages of nursing and support staff have obvious consequences on the quality of care, generating potential damage to patients' health."
