A fatal lack of oxygen, caused by respiratory distress syndrome: this is believed to be the cause of the newborn's death, which occurred approximately 40 minutes after birth , on Monday evening at the Policlinico di Monserrato.

The hypothesis emerged from the investigations carried out by order of the Cagliari Prosecutor's Office, which started an investigation to reconstruct the incident. The case was opened by the Prosecutor Gilberto Ganassi, who entrusted the tests to Brotzu consultants, Giovanni Paolo Maietta and Giorgia Locci, a forensic doctor and a pathologist.

The little girl was born after a cesarean section, decided by the doctors because the placenta would have abrupted at the 35th week.

A premature birth, then. And respiratory distress syndrome is a lung disease of premature babies in which the lung alveoli do not remain open due to the absence or deficiency of a substance that covers them, called surfactant.

To be certain, it is necessary to wait for the outcome of the histological tests, the results of which will be known in 90 days.
