Organ procurement continues at the Duilio Casula Polyclinic. In recent days, thanks to the generosity of a donor's family, a new multi-organ donation was performed: a gesture of great generosity that has offered a concrete opportunity to those waiting for a transplant, allowing them to continue living or improve their quality of life.

"The heart, lungs, liver, and kidneys were harvested," explains Dr. Marcello Saba, transplant coordinator at the University Hospital of Cagliari. "The organs have already been transplanted in Sardinia and throughout Italy. This result confirms the solidity of the program built over the years at the Cagliari University Hospital and demonstrates the generosity of those citizens who express their desire to donate in their lifetime, along with that of their families who, in a moment of profound grief, make the harvest possible and offer a second chance to the many people on the waiting list."

The data confirm the growth of the activity. In 2025, two reports of potential donors led to a donation; in 2026, the number of notifications rose to eight and multi-organ donations to six, a 500% increase. "This is the result of the quality of the multidisciplinary approach and the collaboration between the various skills involved in achieving a shared goal," Saba continues. "This synergy allows for the transfer of patients to intensive care and, when all the conditions are met, allows a potential donor to become an actual donor, always in full respect of the wishes expressed during life or the non-opposition of the eligible donors."

"I would like to thank all my colleagues in the Medical Directorate, the staff in the operating room, intensive care, anesthesia, neurology, laboratory, emergency room, and radiology, as well as all the hospital wards and the ambulance and transport service," concludes Dr. Saba. "With professionalism and dedication, they continue to make all this possible."
