A new case of West Nile virus has been confirmed in the province of Oristano. The man is over seventy years old and is currently hospitalized at San Martino Hospital. This brings the total number of West Nile virus infections recorded in the Oristano area since the beginning of 2026 to 29.
The Department of Hygiene and Health Prevention of Local Health Authority 5 has already begun the epidemiological investigation and preventive measures. The competent authorities will disinfect the area where the person who contracted the virus lives.
"Despite the drop in temperatures and the rains, which are creating a humid climate, mosquitoes are still present, which transmit the virus through their bites," states the Prevention Department of the Oristano Local Health Authority. " Once again, it's important to emphasize prevention and protection measures. Prevention is essential, avoiding standing water, an ideal habitat for these insects: empty plant saucers, change pets' water bowls frequently, and be careful about containers where water can stagnate. But it's also important to protect yourself, both indoors and outdoors, with mosquito nets, repellent sprays, and long clothing, especially at dusk, when mosquitoes are most active."
"We must not let our guard down," says Grazia Cattina, director general of the Oristano Local Health Authority. "The virus is now endemic in our area, so it's important for each of us to protect ourselves and those most exposed, the elderly and vulnerable."
