"Looking at the pages of the newspaper and reading about the accident of the patrol car during the chase I was stunned", in "an instant I went back in time. Memories, images of that tragic night came back to mind reopening an unhealed wound in my heart". This is how the letter sent to the Police Chief of Cagliari, Rosanna Lavezzaro, by Maria Teresa Spolitu, sister of the 22-year-old policeman, Pietro Spolitu, who together with his colleague Vincenzo Fracasso, 27, died during a chase by thieves on February 29, 1976 in Quartu, begins.
"The patrol car - recalls Maria Teresa Spolitu - crashed into a pillar of a house in Quartu Sant'Elena in Viale Colombo. The bodies of the two policemen were extracted from the twisted metal of the passenger compartment. This time the toll to pay was not so tragic, but the two circumstances, very similar to each other, present us on the one hand with "victims" who with zeal and dedication to the "uniform" carry out their duty, on the other with irresponsible "thugs" who, in the search for their own material well-being and the need to satisfy it, become slaves of need itself, deluding themselves into reaching that ephemeral happiness that alienates them, more and more, from their own being".
Then the conclusion with an invitation to "share and reflect on the concept of good as sister of evil that, nowadays, seems less and less suitable to explain the contradictions of a world that we usually call civil - he writes - only those who have experienced similar tragedies first hand find the courage to expose themselves and fight even just with a simple letter in the hope that public opinion can be involved in a more real and objective awareness in evaluating similar facts in which innocent victims who believe and do their duty are the ones who pay, ready even to sacrifice their own lives for the triumph of justice".
