«It was an emergency in the Uta prison in Cagliari».
The Autonomous Union of Penitentiary Police reports this, reporting yet another act of arson committed by an inmate, following which the officers had to seek medical attention. "It's time to stop this massacre: there are no longer adequate working conditions of safety", thunders the regional secretary of Sappe of Sardinia, Luca Fais, who makes an appeal to the institutions: "We need an intervention to evacuate the prisoners".
The unionist explains that «last night at 10 pm, a foreign prisoner from Rome Rebibbia, who had already been responsible for starting a fire in the Isolation Section a few days ago, where dozens of intoxicated police officers were involved and hospitalized, repeated the same gesture by starting a fire. The intervention of the staff prevented the situation from getting worse, as the man threatened the staff and anyone who approached him with an electric cable . During the rescue and safety phases, two police officers had to seek medical attention».
"This whole situation has now become unbearable for the staff as there are no longer safe conditions due mostly to the overcrowding that grips the institute, over 760 inmates present out of a maximum tolerable capacity of 500 - observes Fasi - It should also be added that there are several troublemaking foreign inmates who continue to destabilize the order and security of the institute. The Cagliari prison is the only one in the region where they continue to transfer inmates from the rest of the peninsula, continuing to make the structure increasingly unmanageable. We believe that we must not wait any longer but must act in the direction of an urgent evacuation of the structure since the working conditions based on aggression and outrage that the police officers of Uta suffer on a daily basis are not tolerable and acceptable".
