One of the waterfront landmarks of Cannigione, a village in Arzachena, is preparing to leave its site, at least temporarily. After more than thirty years overlooking the sea, Maurizio Nazzaretto's work "Il Coro" will be removed from the Riva Azzurra park for safety and redevelopment.
The decision was made by the City Council. Created in 1992 for the Columbiade in Genoa to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the discovery of America, the sculpture was later donated to the Municipality of Arzachena and installed on the Cannigione seafront as a symbol of the bond between man and the sea.
Composed of steel and resin elements on a circular base approximately 12 meters in radius and 4 meters high, the work has always been one of the park's main attractions and embellishments . However, the passage of time has compromised some parts of the structure. The deteriorated ferrous materials are damaged and potentially sharp in some areas, posing a potential risk to visitors, who are particularly numerous today due to the presence of play areas and sports facilities, which are widely used by children. The work, moreover, has no safety barriers, and visitors can actually get up close and enjoy its artistic quality.
To ensure safety and urban decorum, the municipal administration has therefore decided to temporarily remove the work and relocate it to another site, where the necessary restoration work will be assessed and implemented, ultimately returning the work to the community and visitors, enhanced and safe.
