After the rumors of the last few days, today in the cathedral in Sassari, the diocesan administrator, Monsignor Antonio Tamponi, announced the appointment of the new metropolitan archbishop of the diocese of Turritana . As expected, the new archbishop is Monsignor Francesco Antonio Soddu, a 67-year-old native of Chiaramonti , who until now has been in charge of the episcopal see of Terni-Narni-Amelia since 2021.

The high prelate succeeds Msgr. Gianfranco Saba, whom Pope Francis appointed as Military Ordinary for Italy on April 10, 2025. After 10 months, Pope Leo has appointed Soddu, former parish priest of the Cathedral of Sassari from 1997 to 2012 and, among other positions, Director of the Diocesan Caritas of Sassari.
