Just under 5,000 inhabitants (there are 4,718 residents), but over 2 million euros in fines. This is the figure, relating to 2024, recorded by the Municipality of Monastir: almost 2.4 million, the second in all of Sardinia behind only Cagliari. Very high numbers, due in large part - obviously - to the speed camera positioned at kilometer 19.4 of the 131, towards Cagliari, which regularly causes a "massacre" of motorists who exceed the speed limit.

The analysis was conducted by Facile.it on Siope data, the information system for public entity operations. On the island, the total revenue declared by the provincial capitals alone exceeded 7.3 million euros, an increase of almost 1% compared to 2023. Cagliari is in first place, with almost 4.2 million euros from fines and penalties paid by families for violations of the Highway Code. Sassari is at 2.1 million euros, Nuoro 900,000 euros, Oristano “just” 115,000.

Facile.it also calculated the value of "fine per capita": it is the ratio between the proceeds registered in Siope and the number of resident inhabitants. It should be noted, however, that not all fines are given to resident motorists and, indeed, in some areas tourists and commuters contribute significantly to the overall figure. At the top of the list, with a fine per capita of 28.3 euros, is once again the municipality of Cagliari . Following in second place is the municipality of Nuoro, with a per capita value of 26.8 euros. On the lowest step of the podium is Sassari (17.6 euros). Closing the regional ranking, once again, is Oristano, with a fine per capita value of just 3.8 euros.

In the municipalities with less than 5,000 inhabitants, after Monastir, Palau comes in second : 4,113 inhabitants, almost 186,000 euros in revenue from traffic fines. In third place is Golfo Aranci, 2,375 inhabitants and 125,000 euros in fines for violations of the Highway Code.
