Nine abandoned and shivering lambs , with their legs tied with nylon twine , were found by the foresters in the "Puisteris" area, in the countryside of the Municipality of Mogoro .
The discovery, which dates back to the evening of March 11, on the recommendation of a citizen.
The animals, aged between 7 and 14 days of life , were devoid of identifying marks and half hidden by vegetation. Entrusted to the veterinary service of the Asl of Oristano, they were then subjected to criminal seizure and given in judicial delivery to a breeder in the area for first aid.
The Public Prosecutor's Office of Oristano was immediately informed of the incident with detailed information on the crime. The Forestry investigation will continue to identify any perpetrators.
From the investigations carried out so far, it is clear that we are dealing with an abandonment of animals from a farm , with the aggravating circumstance of ill-treatment due to the use of cruel techniques, since immobilizing the legs with string to make the lambs easy prey for foxes or stray dogs causes slow agony and great suffering to the animal which in an attempt to free itself causes deep wounds .
The use of such practices is prohibited both by the legislation in force on the abuse of animals and by that on the protection of animals: anyone who, out of cruelty or without necessity, causes the death of an animal is punished with imprisonment from four months to two years . while anyone who "due to cruelty or without necessity causes an injury to an animal or subjects it to torture" is punished with imprisonment from three to eighteen months or with a fine from 5,000 to 30 thousand euros .
At the moment, the most plausible hypothesis on the cowardly act would appear to be mere economic interests, since with the suppression of the young the costs for their breeding are saved and, at the same time, a greater milk production is obtained which in the current year had a sharp rise in the market price.
