Another natural miracle in Asinara National Park, the "home" of sea turtles. For the first time, a Caretta caretta sea turtle nest has been documented on the beach of Cala dei Ponzesi.
From 86 eggs laid, 61 turtles hatched, with a 71 percent hatching success rate. For the operators of Crama, the Asinara Marine Animal Recovery Center, "this represents a unique and extraordinary result, linked to the excellent conditions of the site and continuous monitoring, fundamental elements that have allowed us to collect valuable scientific data on the late-nesting hatching of this protected species."
This record-breaking event in this marine protected area marks a significant milestone for marine wildlife conservation, a testament to the value of scientific research and the collaboration between institutions and citizens. Part of the credit goes to the island's many visitors, who were particularly sensitive in reporting certain events. Indeed, it was some tourists who spotted the first baby turtle on the beach, a gesture that allowed protection protocols to be promptly activated.
The nest, identified on October 4th after some visitors reported a chick on the shoreline, was immediately secured by the staff of the Crama Centre and monitored for over twenty days in collaboration with researchers from the CReS of the Regional Network for the Conservation of Marine Fauna. Their care and professionalism allowed us to witness an extraordinary event.
