" We fully support and stand in solidarity with the Joint Committee's counteraction against the approval of the bill proposed in the Chamber of Deputies by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's party, Brothers of Italy. This bill addresses the Military Code regarding health and environmental protection in military areas."

These are the words of Francesco Pigliaru and Gianpiero Scanu – former governor and former president of the commission of inquiry into depleted uranium – in the aftermath of the harsh stance taken by Comipa, the committee that deals with the activities of the armed forces on the island, which sent a detailed letter to the Regional Council (president and group leaders) challenging their inaction in the face of state initiatives and the war industry in Sardinia.

"We are faced with a serious and arrogant act by the Government," write Pigliaru and Scanu, "which, using the exploitative pretext of so-called 'recent international tensions,' aims to erase—with a veritable show of force—the gains achieved by the Region in over sixty years of institutional and civil battles. The objective is clear: to reaffirm the principle of supremacy and exclusive state power over the use and protection of territories affected by military activities, a principle that was laboriously overcome and which is now being attempted to be reintroduced in an authoritarian manner ."
"With a single stroke of the pen," they continue, "the environmental safety regulations at military ranges would be eliminated, along with the establishment of independent environmental observatories at ranges and military training areas—fundamental tools for transparency, oversight, and the protection of local communities. Strong and determined political opposition is urgently needed to defeat this bill. We hope this action will be led by the Regional Council and by a bipartisan initiative by the Sardinian Council and parliamentarians, supporting and assisting COMIPA in defending regional prerogatives, public health, and environmental protection at military ranges."
