New arrivals on the coasts of southern Sardinia, and growing concern for the First Reception Center and Hotspot in Monastir, which has long been suffering from overcrowding. 103 migrants arrived on Saturday and were then transferred to the Hotspot for identification.
This brings the total number of arrivals in just three days to nearly 400. Since yesterday morning, the Guardia di Finanza's naval unit has been working tirelessly to intercept several small boats south of the Sulcis coast. After boarding the patrol boat, they escorted them to the commercial port of Sant'Antioco, which has become the main landing point in southern Sardinia.
The numbers are constantly updated , and in addition to the many young people boarding the boats, there are also women and minors, like those who disembarked yesterday at Porto Pino: the local police of Sant'Anna Arresi have taken charge of 27 people, including two pregnant women and a child. Frontex personnel are also on site for initial identification operations. Another group has been reported in the area of the Capo Teulada shooting range, but this may not be a new landing: some of the migrants who arrived Friday evening managed to escape without being seen. 118 was also alerted for the intervention, which sent the Southern Sardinia Emergencies ambulance to the area. Given the favorable weather and sea conditions, it is not ruled out that further disembarkations may occur today.
"We are deeply concerned about the recent arrivals and the impact on the management of the Monastir Center and the security of our territory," said Macomer Mayor Paola Ugas . "The situation requires immediate attention and constant coordination between all institutions and law enforcement agencies. For this reason, I have already asked the Prefecture to urgently convene the Committee for Public Order and Security, so that we can assess the situation and identify the necessary measures."
Just a month ago, the facility housed around 800 people, despite its capacity of around 300. This situation continues to concern residents as well. Last night, in Cagliari, many took to the streets for a peaceful demonstration in defense of local safety. "As an administration, we have a duty to represent the concerns of citizens and demand concrete responses. The safety of the community cannot be underestimated," concludes Ugas. "The response from the Prefecture and the Police Headquarters was prompt. We were summoned Tuesday afternoon to express our concerns, before the critical situation worsens."
