The day-long conference " Human Rights and Migration in the World Order " concluded this morning in the Parliamentary Group Room of the Chamber of Deputies in Rome. This conference marks the next stage in the process toward the General Assembly of Migration, promoted by Conadimi, the National Council of Diasporas and Migrations. The meeting, held at Via di Campo Marzio 78, brought together institutions, universities, experts, and civil society to discuss the governance of migration, with a distinguished Sardinian speaker among the panelists. The proceedings were opened by Simona Bonafè, a Democratic Party MP, a former MEP for two terms and a long-standing figure in national and European politics.
Conadimi National President Elizabeth Rijo led the conference . A project manager and social activist with extensive experience in the field of migration, she holds a degree in Civil Engineering and Architecture from the University of Cagliari. She opened the day with a presentation entitled "Towards the States General of Migration: A Governance Based on Human Rights" and drew conclusions from it.
"The States General of Migration seeks to create a stable space for discussion in which institutions, academia, diasporas, and civil society can contribute to the development of concrete proposals," emphasized Elizabeth Rijo. "Migration raises crucial issues for the future of our societies: rights, security, development, cooperation, and social cohesion. Addressing them requires knowledge of the phenomena, listening to local communities, and the ability to transcend simplified interpretations."
In the first panel, "Migration, Human Rights, and the New World Order," two Sardinian voices contributed. Felix CC Adandedjan, an engineer and coordinator of the CIDCI (Italian Council for International Cooperation in Human Rights), and a resident of Sardinia, addressed the topic of migration in the new geopolitical order, amidst global crises, development, and cooperation. Professor Carlo Pilia, a lawyer from the University of Cagliari, spoke about community and intercultural mediation as tools for migration governance. Both are also among the conference's scientific advisors.
The third panel, dedicated to the protection of rights and individuals, featured two Sardinian lawyers: Pierandrea Setzu and Vittorio Michele Delogu , who discussed procedural guarantees and the protection of migrants' fundamental rights. Setzu, a criminal lawyer at the Cagliari Bar Association, shared the experience of those who defend these guarantees in court every day.
"How a country treats migrants says a lot about the strength of its rule of law," stated Setzu. " The right to defense, due process, and human dignity are not concessions; they apply to everyone, and especially to those in the most vulnerable situations . Bringing to Rome the experience of those who work in the courts every day means providing a concrete perspective, grounded in the reality of proceedings and individuals."
The day, moderated by journalist Carmina Conte, was streamed live on the Chamber of Deputies' institutional channels.
