A dolphin - bottlenose dolphin species - in an advanced state of decomposition was found beached on the shoreline in Marina di Sorso , on the Sorso coast. On site were the staff of Crama - Marine Animal Recovery Center - who coordinated the operations together with the ASL, the Port Authority of Porto Torres, and the Forestry Corps.
Given the state of decomposition, it was urgent to move and dispose of it as soon as possible due to public health issues, an intervention under the responsibility of the Municipality of Sorso.
The Crama specialists have carried out the species recognition and the biometric data collection. According to the findings of the ASL doctors, the animal was 1.70 meters long, deceased for some time and of indistinguishable sex.
The bottlenose dolphin is one of the most widespread cetaceans in all the seas of the world except the Arctic and Antarctic areas, belonging to the Delphinidae family, one of the few that tolerate captivity. For this reason, it is the most studied species.
