The trial for the murder of Marco Mameli , 22, from Ilbono , killed during Carnival celebrations in Bari Sardo on March 1, 2024, has opened in the Assize Court in Cagliari. The only defendant charged with the crime appeared in court: Giampaolo Migali, 28, from Girasole . Migali had been arrested a year and a half after the crime and is being defended by lawyers Francesca Ferrai and Maria Leonida Cadoni.
He is charged with murder, aggravated by futile motives , as well as with wounding another young man from Ilbono, Andrea Contu, 27, who was stabbed before Marco Mameli. At the opening of the hearing, the defense requested that the expert report conducted during the investigation be inadmissible because Migali—according to his lawyers—was not notified despite already being a suspect , albeit not formally under investigation. Prosecutors Paola Dal Monte and Giovanna Morra disagreed, as did the civil parties: lawyer Gianluigi Mastio (representing the victim's father Andrea Mameli, his mother Simonetta Campus, and his sister Laura Mameli) and his colleague Giampaolo Pilia (currently represented by Carlo Demurtas), who was acting on behalf of Andrea Contu.
Marco Mameli's family is present in the courtroom behind the prosecutors : his father, Andrea Mameli, hasn't taken his eyes off the defendant, even though their gazes never met. The day after the crime, Migali went to the police station to confess to wounding Contu, but claimed he had lost the knife. He has always denied being the perpetrator of the murder.
