The Maracalagonis Municipality is now in open crisis with the resignation of nine councilors who rejected the budget yesterday. Mayor Francesca Fadda has also resigned.
The resigning councilors are Saverio Pinna, Gregorio Contini, Elisabetta Melis, Antonio Melis, Sebastiano Ghironi, Ennio Fogli, Valentina Pisu, Mariangela Perra, and Gianluca Mudu. The assembly will therefore soon be dissolved with the arrival of the Commissioner, who will be appointed by the Region.
A fall two and a half months before the June vote . And the election campaign is already underway. Mayor Fadda announced her re-election over a month ago. There's also talk of at least two other lists, but for now, these are just rumors. Nothing official, in short.
In a statement, the nine resigning councilors spoke of "a strong decision, not improvised, but developed in light of a political situation that had been evident for some time: this administration no longer had the numbers to govern . Yesterday's vote against the budget sent a strong, clear, and unequivocal political signal. A signal that, it should be noted, did not automatically lead to the dissolution of the City Council, but rather opened up a political space that the Mayor could and should have managed responsibly. In light of that vote, the Mayor was offered a concrete option : bring the budget back to the Council, obtain its approval, and resign immediately thereafter, thus ensuring an orderly transition and protecting the institution. A serious, institutional path, in the exclusive interest of the community."
For Francesca Fadda, what happened appears to be "a palace conspiracy," as she wrote on her website, "to block progress and maintain power. But they failed to take into account my determination and integrity, despite having tried every means to send us home for five years and four months, to no avail. Well, dear friends and fellow citizens, with great regret but still full of energy, I will continue to work for the good of Maracalagonis, even if it means no longer being Mayor until the Commissioner arrives. I am ready to continue, even if it means doing so from outside the Town Hall, knowing that this currently slim majority, composed of eight people who have worked tirelessly, has created a new way of 'Living Maracalagonis' that is there for all to see."
