Established in 2013, the La Spiga d'Oro award, presented during the final leg of the Saboris Antigus food and tradition festival, recognizes local people who bring prestige to our communities, or individuals at various levels who show concern for or work toward the growth of our area.

With these words, Mandas Mayor Umberto Oppus introduced the award ceremony for this year's prize, awarded by the "I Sentieri del grano" consortium to Cagliari Prefect Giuseppe Castaldo, who "during his tenure has been a constant point of reference for the area and for the requests made by our municipalities."

The decision was made unanimously by the consortium's mayors, upon the recommendation of Gergei Mayor Rossano Zedda. The award was presented during the Mandas di Saboris Antigus stage (the traveling event held in the villages of the Sentieri del Grano) by Tg1 deputy editor-in-chief Anna Scafuri and Guasila mayor and regional councilor Paola Casula. The first winner of the award, twelve years ago, was jockey Giovanni Atzeni, known as the legendary Tittia, who at the time had just won a double at the Palio di Siena.
