Alessia Mureddu, a 21-year-old from Macomere, is in Africa, in Sierra Leone, on a humanitarian mission.

She is staying with the Xaverian missionary community, which supports local people living in difficult situations. Winner of the Nino Carrus Award, the young woman hasn't had time to celebrate. She's been in Sierra Leone since Monday.

"I'm here to help. A help that isn't limited to financial assistance," says the young missionary, "but is a deeper support, made up of presence, listening, and sharing . It's a help that tries to reach people's hearts and souls, restoring dignity, hope, and faith in the future to those who live amid so many difficulties."

An experience that the young woman from Macomer wants to live and has always wanted to do, supported by her parents and sister, the parish, as well as her friends.

"We live in a world where everything is within reach," says the young missionary. "Precisely for this reason, we risk forgetting the true value of things. On this journey, I will bring with me patience, respect, and a great deal of humility. I will try to put myself, as much as possible, in other people's shoes, living this experience with an open heart and stripping myself of the prejudices and stereotypes that today's society often instills in us without realizing it. I hope to be able to give of myself to others without fear or dread, allowing myself to be touched by the encounters, the gazes, and the stories I will experience."

Alessia Mureddu began her work as an oratory leader at a very young age, first with the Salesian Sisters and in recent years in the parish. The parish itself wrote in a brief statement: " We joyfully accompany in prayer our leader Alessia, who will be experiencing a mission in Sierra Leone. In these months, we can help her encounter and experience a young Church, born and raised amid many trials, rich in faith and hope."
