Torn by internal divisions, the Union of Municipalities is heading towards an unprecedented crisis. Six mayors on one side are demanding the removal of President Franco Scanu and his replacement with an authoritative leader; four mayors on the other, including that of Macomer. The latter are aiming to maintain the current structure and thus the unity of the territory, defending the president's actions and thus seeking dialogue, which, however, appears impossible.

A head-on confrontation. A difficult, in some ways dramatic, situation that is inevitably leading to a political crisis within the institution, to the detriment of the entire region. An unprecedented crisis, with no visible solution. This was the focus of the press conference attended by the mayor of Macomer, Riccardo Uda; the mayor of Sindia, Franco Scanu (acting president); the mayor of Silanus, Gian Pietro Arca; and the mayor of Lei, Luigi Cadau.

"The union of municipalities," it was stated during the press conference, "does not need, as the six signatory mayors request, authoritative leadership, because it already has one in Sindia's mayor, Franco Scanu. His mandate will expire soon, and until then, we will continue to support him, opposing initiatives that are damaging not only to Marghine, but also to the individual communities of Birori, Bolotana, Borore, Bortigali, Dualchi, and Noragugume, which their own mayors apparently want to appear to be protecting with a hostile, yet meaningless, act."

At the press conference, it was emphasized that the six mayors calling for President Scanu's head are deliberately trying to hide the fact that they are a distinct minority in the area, representing only a third of the population. "They want to impose a minority government, which we will fight strenuously to prevent this trend, whose aims are still unclear, from continuing. We will call for the establishment of a weighted vote."

A concept reiterated by Mayor Riccardo Uda, by President Franco Scanu himself, by the mayor of Lei Luigi Cadau («An act of sabotage that leads nowhere»), and then by the mayor of Silanus, Gian Pietro Arca («The six mayors' action is an act of bullying»).

President Franco Scanu announces the assembly will be convened soon, but the outcome seems a foregone conclusion. There will be a majority, a new president, but the whole thing could last only a few months, considering that elections will be held in several countries next year.
