A long column of black smoke rose into the sky above the Tossilo industrial area, visible for kilometers, heralding the scene the Carabinieri of the Macomer Company encountered: a huge pile of burning waste, with all kinds of materials consumed by the blaze. Three people—two men, aged 54 and 51, and a 46-year-old woman—were arrested red-handed by the police for illegal waste burning, a crime aggravated by the increased penalties provided for by the so-called "Terra dei Fuochi" decree. According to the findings, the suspects were setting fire to waste, including hazardous materials: refrigerators, gas stoves, plastic, wood, glass, and other bulky waste. It was precisely the thick, dark smoke that gave them away, as spotted by the Carabinieri of the Mobile Radio Unit who were on duty in the area. Upon arriving on the scene, the military requested the intervention of the Fire Brigade, who successfully extinguished the flames and secured the area. The entire site was then placed under lockdown for further investigation. The intervention, the force emphasizes, confirms the Carabinieri's constant attention to environmental and land protection, particularly in rural and industrial areas, which are often the scene of abandoned and illegal waste disposal. Vigilance will continue to address phenomena that threaten public health and the ecosystem.
