A fire set in a block of the Macomer repatriation center has further heightened tensions within the facility between police and migrants. The incident occurred yesterday, according to the SIULP police union.
"This is yet another serious incident that brings to light, in all its drama, a situation that has long been denounced and which can no longer be treated as a mere temporary emergency."
The fire was started inside one of the facility's blocks, sparking moments of high tension and effectively endangering everyone's safety. "This is a particularly serious incident that takes on even more worrying dimensions," the union reports, "considering that part of the CPR is already unusable due to a previous fire . This reduces available space, further complicates management of the facility, and increases the level of operational risk for the staff responsible for ensuring its operation."
A situation that hasn't degenerated "only thanks to the officers' professionalism." On this point, the union is clear: "Police officers are called upon, every day, to perform an extraordinarily complex service, requiring high levels of professional skill, poise, self-control, and the ability to intervene in extremely high-risk situations. They do so with absolute dedication and in strict compliance with the law, but too often in operating conditions made difficult by structural, organizational, and regulatory challenges that inevitably end up burdening their responsibilities."
"It is unacceptable," a statement reads, "that incidents of this nature recur so frequently that they risk being considered normal. Every fire, every act of violence, every damage represents a concrete danger to the lives and physical integrity of workers."
The Siulp Sardegna "strongly calls on national and regional politicians to finally address the issue of repatriation detention centers with a pragmatic and decisive approach , abandoning emergency logics that have demonstrated all their limitations."
