Sardinia confirms its position as a natural laboratory of biodiversity and fertile ground for scientific research . Further proof of this is the discovery of a new beetle species, Rhizotrogus ruzzantei , identified in the Lower Sulcis region, between Domus de Maria, Sant'Antioco, and Villa San Pietro. The research was led by Sardinian entomologists Erika Bazzato and Davide Cillo, together with Guido Sabatinelli of the Geneva Museum of Natural History .

Scientists have distinguished the new insect from a very similar species, Rhizotrogus genei, found throughout Sardinia and even in Corsica. The main difference is the length of the forelimbs, which are longer in the new species. Another detail that varies from species to species is the coloration of the pronotum, the dorsal part immediately behind the head.

Confirmation came after the analysis of approximately 450 specimens and specific statistical tests, which confirmed the existence of two distinct species. The new discovery, dedicated to Giampaolo Ruzzante, who first noted the morphological differences, further reinforces Sulcis Iglesiente's role as an area with a high rate of endemism, favored by its ancient geological history and relative isolation from the rest of the island.
