Thousands of Velella velella species have invaded La Pelosa beach in Stintino, transforming the splendid shoreline into a characteristic expanse of blue.
Like every year, the mistral winds carry small St. Peter's boats similar to jellyfish, a planktonic species belonging to the hydrozoan class that forms floating colonies that are quite typical in this period.
The blue color of the fins provides them with shielding from ultraviolet light, while the triangular, sail-like crest allows them to move across the water's surface using the push of the wind.
The storm surges and the strong winds of the last few days have created some inconvenience on the coast, but on today's sunny day, Sunday 30 March, many curious people took advantage of the good weather to observe the blue carpet, a natural phenomenon that does not pose any danger to human health.
The optical effect is surprising, an association of individuals that, as happens in corals, united together form a single body.
