A wooden restaurant was destroyed overnight by a raging fire in Monte d'Arena, near the popular beach. The alarm was raised shortly before 2:00 a.m. The flames quickly engulfed the entire structure, destroying it; only a few furnishings and metal parts remained.
Firefighters from the La Maddalena Fire Department responded to the scene, supported by Civil Protection and the Barracellare Company. The teams worked throughout the night to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to the surrounding lush Mediterranean vegetation. The lack of wind aided operations: only a light breeze blew during the night. The extinguishing effort, which began shortly before 2:00 a.m., continued until 8:30 a.m. Further cleanup efforts were necessary that morning.
The new water supply point, installed a few days ago by the La Maddalena Municipal Maintenance Office, just a few hundred meters from the renowned beach and the restaurant, was a godsend. It allowed the tankers to be continuously refilled, avoiding trips of at least a couple of kilometers.
During the fire, a gas cylinder also exploded, fortunately without injury. The other gas cylinders did not explode. The cause of the fire remains to be determined: investigations will determine whether it was accidental or intentional.
