In Stintino it will be possible to bury animals that die from bluetongue. The authorization is part of the seven specific ordinances for the local breeders involved, requested by the prevention department of the animal health service of the ASL veterinary and issued by the Municipality. This is because the use of the incinerator is not feasible, due to the seriousness of the situation and limited resources, even though incineration is one of the standard methods of disposal to prevent the spread of diseases .
In addition to burial, the ordinances also provide for the seizure of livestock infected with the virus, in order to limit the movement of animals and contain the contagion . The bluetongue virus, transmitted by the bites of insect vectors (Culicoides), represents a particularly serious threat during periods of mild temperatures such as the current ones.
"We are facing a complex situation that is hitting our farmers hard," said Rita Vallebella, mayor of Stintino. " We are taking all necessary measures to limit the damage and ensure the health safety of our territory . I realize the difficulties that this epidemic causes for the companies involved and we hope that the affected farmers can obtain compensation for the losses suffered by the Sardinia Region. The municipal administration will continue to work closely with the competent authorities to ensure the best possible support during this emergency."
The ordinances will remain in force until further notice, they will be followed by further indications based on the evolution of the health situation.
