The population decline continues in Italy and especially in Sardinia, the region where the most negative data is recorded (-5.8 per thousand) after Basilicata (-6.3 per thousand).

This is what the latest report on demographic indicators released by Istat , relating to the year 2024, highlights.

Overall, as of December 31, 2024, the resident population in our country is 58 million 934 thousand individuals, a decrease of 37 thousand units compared to the same date of the previous year, with the decrease in the population continuing uninterrupted since 2014. At a national level, last year in Italy there was an overall decrease of 0.6 per thousand, in line with what was observed in previous years (-0.4 per thousand in 2023 and -0.6 per thousand in 2022). On the Island, however, the decrease in inhabitants is much more marked.

Sardinia - as stated in the Istat report - is also confirmed as the region with the lowest fertility: in 2024, the average number of children per woman is equal to 0.91, stable compared to 2023.

The national figure is also at an all-time low: the average is 1.18 children per woman.

Finally, together with Lazio, Basilicata and Molise, the Island is also the region with the most postponed “reproductive calendar”: the average age of childbirth is in fact equal to 33.2 years.
