By 2032, Sardinia could have 50,000 fewer children .
An alarming fact that emerged from the in-depth day organized in Cagliari by the Neonatology complex of Brotzu.
An island with few births, ever fewer children, and an increasingly uncertain future, lacking the youthful energies to breathe new life into society.
"The critical threshold was reached in 2018, when we dropped below 10,000 births," explains Manuel Scarano, director of Neonatology at Brotzu. And since then, the figure has continued to decline: "Now we've reached 6,500, so we've truly lost a lot of babies."
The fertility rate, or the number of children born per woman of childbearing age, has fallen from 1.3 in 2011 to the current 0.89, "the lowest figure in all of Italy." And at this rate, "by 2032, we could have 50,000 fewer children in the 0-14 age group."
This is why Brotzu organized the event to reach out to young people and raise awareness. Cagliari coach Fabio Pisacane, who has four children, also attended the meeting: "He knows how to talk to young people, I hope his message gets through," Scarano said.
"I'm not a perfect dad, I'm not very present, but when I am, I try to be very involved with them in their daily lives. The most pressure is at home; my kids are involved in the training," the Rossoblù coach quipped.
